Montmartre, Saint-Vincent or Calvaire: which cemetery to visit?

The three names are not three entrances to the same place. The large Montmartre cemetery, northern-slope Saint-Vincent and Calvaire beside Saint-Pierre differ in location and visiting arrangements. Choose according to your date and visiting needs, then prepare the corresponding map.

The short answer

What matters before you go.

For an ordinary visit, compare Montmartre and Saint-Vincent against your route: the first is reached through avenue Rachel, the second through rue Lucien-Gaulard. Calvaire is not a daily alternative: the City lists only free guided visits on 1 November, without independent entry.

Action plan

The route,
step by step.

Times and order are guideposts. Always adapt the visit to crowds, actual access and your group’s energy.

01

Identify the site before travelling

Write down the full name and entrance address. Searching only for “Montmartre cemetery” can take you away from the grave or area you meant to visit.

02

Check the date and download the right map

Municipal grave plans are more precise than a general map pin. For Calvaire, confirm arrangements for 1 November in your chosen year before planning entry.

03

Plan a respectful visit

Save games, picnics and sports for other places. Adapt your route if a funeral procession or family occupies a path. Plan breaks outside.

Useful trade-offs

What really changes the visit.

01

Avoid collecting cemetery stops

Choose one matching your subject: artistic history, a northern-slope walk or an exceptional visit. Three successive stops do not automatically improve the experience.

02

Plan access separately

Municipal access information differs between cemeteries. Check the exact entrance, paths and conditions; an adapted Saint-Vincent route does not describe Calvaire.

Practical questions

Before confirming the route.

Can I visit all three on one day?+

Calvaire requires a specific date and guided visit. For an ordinary day, build your choice around Montmartre or Saint-Vincent.

Which site is close to the vineyard?+

Saint-Vincent is on the northern slope. Use its detail page alongside the vineyard page without confusing their entry conditions.
