Funicular: tickets, payment and choosing your climb
The funicular crosses a steep section. It does not replace travel from your arrival station or the remaining paths to your destination. Plan payment, station access and the rest of your walk separately to avoid a rushed decision at the validator.
The short answer
What matters before you go.
When checked on 6 October 2026, RATP lists direct contactless payment at €2.55 per journey, with up to four travellers on one bank card. Métro-Train-RER tickets and compatible passes are also accepted. Direct bank payment covers the funicular; it is not a sightseeing pass.
Action plan
The route,
step by step.
Times and order are guideposts. Always adapt the visit to crowds, actual access and your group’s energy.
Choose the complete journey
Identify whether you arrive at the foot or summit. For a museum or show booking, plan travel to the final address first, then decide whether the funicular helps.
Check your payment medium
If you already have a pass, check its validity before paying with your bank card. Keep the same payment medium available for inspection. Do not use a discount without meeting its conditions.
Keep an alternative
A queue, interruption or group fatigue can change your choice. Steps suit only people able to use them; sloping streets do not guarantee a route suitable for everyone.
Useful trade-offs
What really changes the visit.
Plan your return
Separate the climb from the return and check your ticket’s rules. Do not automatically rely on the ticket used for your metro arrival after leaving the network.
Avoid an outdated fare
Prices are dated. For a future trip, check RATP before setting your transport budget.
Practical questions
Before confirming the route.
Does a bank card replace all Paris tickets?+
The service described here applies to the funicular. Check other networks and tickets separately.
Does arrival at the summit guarantee a step-free visit?+
No: check the remaining paths and each venue entrance. Adapted access for the climb does not describe the whole visit.
Check on the day
Official and practical sources.
Hours, outages, works, prices and access conditions change. For any important requirement, check the relevant source and contact the venue directly.
